I Stopped Playing New Games - Fri, Oct 20, 2023
Well.. not *all* new games, but let me explain.
I used to enjoy gaming, alot, and I still do. But more often than not, I find myself scrolling mindlessly on various social media sites instead of … sigh … gaming.
And I think there’s a reason for that. A good chunk of games today, especially multiplayer games, suck. They are a big blob of bloat and skinner boxes designed to keep you engaged just enough to get your money. And part of that is the SaaS mentality that the tech industry has adopted over the last years.
Think about it.
- DRMs like Denuvo, that make games run slower for the user that bought the game.
- Microtransactions and “battle passes” in games that you already bought.
- Always online single-player games, because why the fuck not.
- Mindless collectables and “side-quests” designed for the sole purpose to keep the playtime high. (looking at you, Ubisoft).
All those things added on top of an industry where half-baked products are becoming the norm.
-
Sure, those issues are attributed mostly to AAA games and gaming companies, but I no longer have the mental capacity to wait and be dissappointed by endless early-access survival games.
- I don’t want to give you money just to look good in the game that I already paid for.
- I don’t want to connect to your servers just for YOU to verify my SINGLEPLAYER GAME! (wtf OVERKILL, I expected better from you)
I … I just want to play the video game in peace. I just want to have fun. Anyway, here is a small list of games that I currently play, and like:
- Banished
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
- Wolfenstein(2009) (not on Steam…)
- Frostpunk
- Call of Duty 1, United Offensive & 2 (Steam price is outrageous. Use other vendors, or second-hand)
